The happy wordsmith knows
Always carry a poem
Wherever you may roam
Brightens the day
You’ll want to be prepared
You may be asked to read
To someone who’s in need
Of cheering up
Joyfully share your gift
You have talent to spare
So, if you really care
Always have two

If there was one thing I did to promote reading in our school, I would have to say that Poem in a Pocket Day was my most successful. Every student had a pocket and at least one poem and we spent the day hearing students read their poems.
I’ll never forget hearing my sixth-graders reading “And Still I Rise.” And I loved hearing Langston Hughes’ “Mother to Son.”
